Testing the Testers: QA in the AI Era

AI tools are already generating unit tests, edge cases, and regression scenarios in seconds. The harder question is who ensures those tests are actually good. At Qubika, QA is evolving into a hybrid discipline combining traditional quality engineering with AI output validation, and the engineers leading that shift are doing more consequential work than ever.

AI-native development isn’t something coming next. It’s already how a lot of teams are building software today. Tools like Claude are already generating large portions of test suites automatically: unit tests, edge cases, regression scenarios, all produced from a feature description in seconds. For engineering organizations, this is a fundamental shift in how quality gets built into a product.

But it creates a new challenge that’s easy to overlook: if AI is generating the tests, who is responsible for making sure those tests are actually good?

QA isn’t going away, but the job is changing

The natural assumption is that more automation means less need for QA engineers. In practice, it’s the opposite. When test generation becomes automated, the critical work moves one level up, from writing tests to validating the systems that generate them, and it’s actually harder work.

This is what we’re seeing across our studios at Qubika. QA is evolving into a hybrid role that combines traditional quality engineering with data validation and AI output vetting. The engineers doing this work aren’t just checking whether tests pass, they’re asking tougher questions: Are we testing the things that actually matter? Does coverage map to real risk? Can the outputs of these pipelines actually be trusted?

Where our accelerators come in

One of the ways we’ve approached this at Qubika is through accelerators and frameworks that standardize how test generation and execution happen across projects. The goal is to take the judgment that experienced QA engineers apply and make it repeatable: the right prompting strategies, the right validation layers, the right checkpoints before generated tests make it into a pipeline.

Our Agentic Framework is one example. When a code change comes in, it automatically analyzes integration points, flags risk areas, and generates targeted test cases, the kind of critical analysis that used to take hours of manual tracing. And because it runs inside a structured framework, the output is consistent regardless of who’s on the team or how much context they have that week.

Beyond generation, we also have additional internal accelerators focused on test suite maintenance, because keeping tests up to date as a codebase evolves is one of the most time-consuming parts of the job, and one of the easiest to let slip.

This matters because AI-generated test suites can look solid… and still miss critical things. A model optimizing for coverage metrics will produce a lot of tests, but it won’t necessarily catch the edge cases that matter most in production. Accelerators help close that gap by encoding quality standards that go beyond what any single generated output can guarantee on its own.

What changes when QA operates at this level

What makes this shift significant isn’t just the change in day-to-day tasks, it’s what becomes possible when QA operates at this level. Feedback loops get shorter because quality checks are built into the generation process, not added at the end. Coverage becomes more reliable because it’s governed by frameworks rather than individual decisions. And the whole system scales in a way that manual testing simply can’t.

None of this replaces the need for human judgment in QA, if anything, it makes that judgment more consequential. The engineers who understand both the technical side and the limitations of AI-generated artifacts are the ones who make these systems trustworthy. That’s a harder skill to develop than writing test scripts, and a more valuable one.

QA in the AI era isn’t a reduced version of what it used to be. It’s a redefinition, toward work that has more leverage, more impact, and more room to shape how quality gets built into modern software.
